Current Requirements for Obtaining a gTLD

Applying for a gTLD is not as simple as applying for a website. In essence, those applying for a gTLD are applying to create and operate a registry business which supports the domain name system. A new gTLD owner is operating a piece of internet infrastructure and must convince ICANN that it has the technical, financial and policy capabilities to do so. In addition, new gTLD applicants must be willing to enter a registry agreement with ICANN. Current registry agreements, such as those for the ".com" extension, may be found at http://www.icann.org/en/about/agreements/registries.
